Themed Chess Sets - The Civil War Era

WWII definitely brought an end to the depression, it also ushered in an era of unprecedented prosperity.
Was the era after the war a time of conformity or change? I was thinking it was conformity because the Cold War made everyone want to prove their loyalty to their nation so they wouldn't be accused by McCarthy. What do you think, and why?
Conformity on an individual scale as you said because of the conservative values and McCarthyism. On a national scale however, America was truly becoming a super power, we also saw the civil rights movement and other cultural changes.
