Boston: BMW dealership and plant get a visit from Martha Stewart
Martha Stewart fan or not, her empire and ability to overcome diversity (read prison) deserves some respect. Her empire may finally be on the brink of destruction, but the hardworking Jersey City girl is certainly not going down without a fight. However, her most recent effort to sustain her realm in the world of design is quite a change from her usual world of bedding, duvet covers and dining room wallpapers. Martha Stewart is now dabbling in the world of automotive design, specifically for the luxurious auto industry leader, BMW.
BMW recently invited Martha Stewart to tour their stateside factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina. A longtime lover and driver of BMW automobiles, Martha and The Martha Stewart Show graciously accepted BMW's invitation. The event tours the BMW factory and viewers get a chance to see intimately how each BMW is manufactured and meet some of the workers who compile the well-made vehicles. For BMW, the company gets exposure to a market perhaps not fully in the know with the happenings of luxurious automakers and in return, Martha Stewart has the chance to design her very own BMW X3.
Through the tour, viewers learn that the BMW Spartanburg plant is the only BMW plant that builds the BMW X3, X5 and X6 vehicles in the world. The factory employs 7,000 American workers and all but the engines are produced right here on American soil. Gaining exposure of these facts can only aid the foreign automaker on patriot soil.
The show follows each step that goes into the production of a BMW X3. The small SUV is rolling out as a second-generation vehicle with the 2011 date, following its award-winning debut generation. BMW claims the new X3 vehicles feature larger interiors, as well as increased driver comfort, performance and efficiency. The show ends when Martha Stewart's design rolls out – an X3xDrive35i in Sparkling Bronze Metallic exterior paint and Sand Beige Nevada Leather interior accented with Fineline Wave Wood trim – always classy, that Martha.
But you don't have to be Martha Stewart to get a chance to customize your own X3 vehicle and this fact is the reason for the BMW segment on The Martha Stewart Show. With the debut of the second-generation BMW X3, BMW is offering a customization program so extensive that the vehicle can be produced differently 70 million times.

Creamed Spinach
Serves 4
1 1/4 pounds spinach, tough stems discarded
10 ounces white pearl onions
5 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose floor
1 1/4 cup whole milk
3/4 cup chopped slab bacon (3 ounces)
1/2 cup heavy cream
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1. Wash spinach, and drain, but do not dry. Transfer to a large skillet. Cover, and cook over medium-high heat, stirring once, until wilted, about 3 minutes. Drain. Let cool slightly; squeeze out any excess liquid. Finely chop; set aside.
2. Bring a medium saucepan of water to a boil. Add onions, and cook until skins soften, about 3 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon (reserve water in pan); rinse under cold water. Trim root ends, and remove skins; halve if large. Return water to a boil. Add onions, and cook until tender, about 10 minutes. Drain, and rinse under cold water.
3. Melt 1/4 cup butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add flour; cook, whisking, 5 minutes. Add milk in a slow, steady stream, whisking constantly. Boil, whisking, 1 minute. Remove from heat.
4. Melt remaining tablespoon butter in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add bacon; cook, stirring occasionally, until well browned, about 6 minutes. Stir in onions and spinach. Stir in cream and reserved milk mixture. Add 1 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, and the nutmeg. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook, stirring, until thickened, about 10 minutes (do not boil). Stir in lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper. Can be refrigerated in an airtight container up to 2 days; reheat in a 300° oven to serve.
