Rebuilding of your family heirlooms
So, the holidays are over,the fancy china has been stacked, the silverware has been cleaned (or not), and replaced in the cloth binders, and the lace tablecloth has been replaced by the utilitarian cotton print. Ahh, time now to sit and have a congratulatory hot cup of tea and reflect on all the fun it was putting on a family gathering. What? The dining chair you are sitting in feels like a cross between stepping onto a small boat and the last phase of setting up a mousetrap! You gingerly hoist yourself up into a standing position, push the back of the chair towards the table, and realize that the beautiful antique you bought 27 years ago didn't do so well in its encounter with 300 pound Uncle Phil - or maybe it was your beautiful grandson who couldn't resist rocking back with glee with every quality Monopoly purchase. It has suddenly become a freewheeling parallelogram.
Chairsare what delineate us from the forest dwellers. You can crouch at the fire pit, or sit at the table. That just sooo comfortable seat that you have had in the family since – well - since you were making the quality Monopoly purchase, has just passed the 50-, 60-, or 70-year mark. Heretofore it's been a reliable purveyor of sittage. Now, it's a potential lawsuit.
What to do?
Well, first of all, know that that beautiful member of your dining room collection is not yet destined for the landfill or the fireplace. It has simply been a victim of, for lack of a simpler handle, "Old Hide Glue Syndrome". From the mid 1700s to the 1940s, furniture in general (and chairs in particular) have been assembled with variations of stickum from the old "glue factory" - that is, cellulose glues derived from animal carcasses. These glues were perfect for their time. They set fast, filled minor imperfections in the joinery, were structurally flexible under use, and were inexpensive for mass production.
What the applied chemists of that era did not account for was oxygen - the giver of life and the crumbler of hide glues. The early derivatives of the post-WW II wholesale switch to petroleum-based products did not fare much better. After about 50 years, a good short sharp shock (Uncle Phil, at speed) shatters the glue. A few "sittings-back" later, we have the aforementioned freewheeling parallelogram.
What to do, then, with your long-cherished family dining chair? Don't continue to sit on it. Please don't allow a trusted family member to mash 5-minute epoxy into the joints. You'll also be better off if you do not search the junk drawer for crazy glue. The solution is to have the chairs gently tapped asunder. The joints are just as good (if you didn't allow Uncle Phil a second year's misuse) as they were at the original construction - and, if properly cleaned of the old glue, and reset with a modern, PVA-type glue, (professionals are available), the first 50 to 70 years of the chairs' existence (during which the tree used to originally make the chair grew up) will be vindicated.
The good news in this story is that the rebuilding of your family heirlooms, if done properly, should result in those chairs benefiting your heirs for decades to come. The trees, which would otherwise be cut to build much less beautiful chairs will be spared. Your Dining Room set will continue to be an heirloom for you and your family in the future.

Is the mac brush number engraved or printed on the MAC 187 from the Heirlooms Brush set?
I noticed that all the other brushes out of the brush set had printed numbers on it, but the 187 se was more engraved than the rest. Does that mean it is fake? Is there anyone out there who bought the heirlooms holiday brush set who can tell me if this is normal?
Mine looks printed but feels a bit raised if i touch it. I bought my set straight from MAC so I know it's real. Can't comment on the others though, I swapped them.
