Hand Blown Glassware dates back from the antediluvian craft of making glass, dating back to almost 50 B.C. Though glass itself was first found around 2500 B.C., it was not primarily perceived of as the art it is known as in contemporary times. In the beginning glass is utilized for a multitude of everyday items, containers for holding liquid were some of the primary items made from glass. But once the hand blown glass process was perfected and better acknowledged, thus emerging as a prevalent practice, the prospects for glass were without boundaries.
The rise in reputation and status of hand blown glass corresponds with the emergence and rise of the Roman Empire. As glass blowing became more established and trendy, its usefulness and elegance made it coveted everywhere around the world. Diverse cultures, religions, and regions acclimatized and adapted it for special functions and rationale, and hand blown glass swiftly became most desired irregardless of their main function.
Chinese artists, for example, are famous for exceptional engraved glass ornaments. In the Middle East, even though Islam frowned upon decorative, luxurious objects, glass works seemed to not be in the equation as elegant hand blown glassware was regularly used in building windows and proudly displayed in domiciles. During the Middle Ages in Europe, glassblowing almost ceased to continue living, but it lived to tell the tale decorative glass and continued to be manufactured for the omnipresent stained glass windows situated in gothic-themed churches and other places of worship.
Having progressed substantially through several sets of disciplines over the course of time, the contemporary method of hand blown glass engage inflating molten glass with a blowpipe and fashioning the glass under tremendously extreme conditions and temperatures. Three furnaces, which are contained in one often-moveable component, are utilized in the three-step glass blowing method. Glass is melted at temperatures up to 2400F (1315C) and is aerated a little to disperse air bubbles. To mold the glass, it is situated in the second furnace, known as the "Glory Hole," where its temperature is maintained above 1350F (730C). Annealing, or aerating the glass for its last molding process and shaping, is done in a place in the "lehr."
The contemporary hand blown glassware association culminated in the early 1960s, when engineer and chemist Dominick Labino started holding workshops with Harvey Littleton, a ceramics expert/ professor. Working with a small furnace to liquefy and blow glass in a tiny private studio, they introduced a revolutionary epoch of studio glass work, rousing and elevating the work of many contemporary glass blowers and taking glass work outside a factory setting and into a whole new dimension. A faction instigated more by the medium than the art manufactured; hand blown glassware remains an incredible art form and coveted all around the world.
Hand blown glassware is now available just about anywhere in the world and range of prices varies from inexpensive to ones which cost hundreds and thousands of dollars. But no matter the price, hand blown glassware always adds a touch of elegance to any table setting or a table center piece.
