Importance of Christmas

Christmas is the day observed on 25th December every year to celebrate the occasion of the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. It is celebrated on 7th January in Orthodox churches, 6th January at Armenian Apostolic Church and 19th January at Armenians of Jerusalem and Holy Land. Lord Jesus was the central figure of Christianity and hence Christmas holds great importance all over the world.

The actual birthday of Jesus is not known and the events of birth are recorded in the two Canonical gospels. It is believed that Christmas had been chosen to correspond with the day exactly nine months after Christians believe Jesus to have been conceived. Christmas lasts for 12 days and it marks the beginning of the biggest season of Christmastide.

Among all the holidays and festivals of the Christian Church year, Christmas is the most observed and popular festival. Some of the protestant churches did not celebrate Christmas during eighteenth and early nineteenth century. In the middle to the latter nineteenth century Christmas was just a regular day and remained an insignificant holiday. The story of Christmas with the images of angels and young mother, shepherds and a stable, wise men and royal intrigues make the season captivating. Christmas has now assumed greater significance as the story of the birth of Jesus is recounted in from the Gospel accounts many old traditions of the Church are revived and preserved during this time..

The importance of Christmas does not end with the tenets of Christianity. Today, it has become one of the most important holidays in the Christian calendar.

How to Celebrate Christmas?

Christmas has become the important commercial holiday today. It is generally considered as the occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ. One can celebrate this festival in numerous ways.

• You can send the greetings and cards to your friends and relatives to wish them Merry Christmas and happy new year
• The Christmas tree is the common Christmas decoration. You can set up a Christmas tree in your home and decorate it with lights and ornaments
• You can hang the mistletoe in the doorway. It is the tradition to kiss when standing under this scented twig
• Place the lights and other decorative items on outdoor shrubs and trees
• Buy gifts for friends and family and pile them under the tree
• Hang the stockings from your mantel so that Santa can leave the items in it when he makes a visit
• Ask your children to write down the list of wishes for toys they would like to have from Santa
• Share this list with Santa so that he can fulfill their request
• Play the Christmas music and get into the holiday spirit. Some of the popular music choices are "Silent Night" and Deck the Halls"
• Prepare the Christmas feast including turkey, stuffing and vegetables, ham and serve a mince-pie for dessert. You can also include other holiday meal recipes from your childhood
• Visit the Church on Christmas Eve

Keep in mind that the true meaning of the Christmas is about giving. Lord Jesus worked his whole life asking for peace in the world. Let us follow the path shown by Him.
